Indie review!: Heroine Cosmetics

A new indie company will be discussed today! Heroine Cosmetics opened their doors in May 2016. The collections are inspired by old-skool comics (Batman, Daredevil, Black Cat to name a few, or general vintage comics) and have a geeky vibe.

Although I'm not an avid comic reader myself - and consequently am completely clueless about the references - I appreciate the coherent theme and I think comic fans will eat their heart out!

Upon opening, the owner provided samples for bloggers. Naturally, I wanted to spread the word and see if they were any good and feel like a pro blogger for once. I'm here today to report!

Will they be as fly as Superman or get caught in Spiderman's web? (I tried.)

I got sent 6 samples, chosen randomly!

From the Believers and Skeptics collection I received: It's Me and The Truth is Out There.

From the Beneath the Sea collection: Sunken Treasure.

From the 25 cent Comics collection (my personal favourite!): Antihero and Villainous.

From the Vigilantes collection: Crime Fighter,

Let's get swatchin'! All matte shades were swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance, the shimmery shades over Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy.

Heroine cosmetics The Truth Is Out There - Villainous - Antihero
The Truth Is Out There - Villainous - Antihero
The Truth Is Out There: a medium forrest green with silver shimmer. The shimmer doesn't stand out too much without primer. Very unique shade!

Villainous: grass green shade, though it's fairly bright. Applied smooth over primer. I was impressed with this one!

Antihero: bright medium cool purple. Same as Villainous, I was impressed to see such a bright shade apply so smoothly. This combined with Villainous is straight-up Joker.

Heroine cosmetics TVillainous - Antihero - Sugarpill Poison Plum
Villainous - Antihero - Sugarpill Poison Plum

I was wondering how Antihero compared to the other bright purple in my collection, Sugarpill's Poison Plum. Poison Plum is definitely more pink and warmer.

Crimefighter: a dark cool purple, almost blurple with silver/blue sparkles. I thought this shade was shimmery so I put it over Pixie Epoxy d'oh. I was not super impressed with this shade, it was a hint patchy (over bare skin, I'm going to ignore the primer part). Plus, matte shades with sparkles are set up for failure: it's either matte and the sparkles don't show up, or (if applied over a sticky base) the sparkles show up but the base is patchy.

Sunken Treasure: beautiful golden brown. Of the shimmer shades, this one was the smoothest!

It's Me: a soft shimmery red with a hint of brown. Also quite rare! Most indie reds tend to run more true red. Also very smooth.

In direct sunlight, to show the shimmer!

I wanted to make a Joker-inspired look, since the shades were perfect for that! Villainous on the lid with Antihero in the crease, and Crimefighter is my eyeliner. The eyeshadows were unexpectedly easy to work with. As I said, anything bright can be quite a pain in the ass, I was happily surprised!

Overall, I'd happily recommend Heroine Cosmetics for those that are interested. The overall theme of the brand is very original and well done, and the quality of eyeshadows was surprisingly good. I think the shade range is fairly unique too - and for indie eyeshadows, that says something. I had a few interactions with the owner as well and she was a pleasure to deal with.

My personal favourites of the samples I received are Villainous, Antihero and Sunken Treasure as I thought the quality of these was the best.

Yep, this store gets my seal of approval!

Check 'em out on their site!

What are your thoughts on this company?

Dupes in my collection #4 - The Body Shop, Hello Waffle, Corvus Cosmetics, etc

Happy February!

Time for another dupe post. When I started this series, I didn't know I had enough dupes to fill up 4 posts, yet here we are! And I can probably - what am I saying, easily - squeeze in a 5th. That's consumerism for you.

This post contains a lot of LE Hello Waffle items, since I got those recently and discovered quite a lot of dupes or similar shades I already had. I know I should guilty about this, but I kind of don't. I know, I know, boo me, but a lot turned out to be the prettier version of what I already had. No ragrets.

Also, fun fact, it took me a good 4 post to figure out that pale highlighters are best captured in artificial light. 'Doh.

Onto the first!

Hello Waffle Emma - Hello Waffle Shenanigans swatch dupe

Hello Waffle Emma - Hello Waffle Shenanigans

Similarity: 95%
Overall: both are pale warm highlighters. These are basically identical, y'all. Shenanigans turns out  to be more cool toned and pink in real life. The description says it should have a grassy tint, but I'm not seeing it.

Go with: they are too similar to choose. If you are on the hunt for a pale warm highlighter and you have the chance to get both, don't.
Why: These are way too similar to justify having both. I have Emma twice, so I basically have the same highlighter three times over. Gorgeous, but I don't need that!

Hello Waffle Luna - Silk Naturals Spotlight highlighter dupe swatch

Hello Waffle Luna - Silk Naturals Spotlight

Similarity: 85%
Overall: both are pale, almost white, pink highlighters. The base shade is basically identical, but Luna is slightly warmer and - biggest difference - contains gold sparkles! So it leans a bit warmer. Also, Luna is intenser. Spotlight almost has a satin finish.

Go with: my personal preference is Luna, because I feel like it's more fairy-like and magical.
Why: ...But since it was part of Hello Waffle's (LE) Kitty Kingdom collection, it's hard to come by, which makes Silk Naturals your best bet if you're in a hurry to get a pale pink highlighter (lmao). Still, I'd recommend checking Sunday Swap posts on /r/IndieMakeupandMore on Reddit, since it is really beautiful.

Aromaleigh Marquess - Hello Waffle Hot Cross Bunnies highlighter swatch dupe

Aromaleigh Marquess - Hello Waffle Hot Cross Bunnies

Similarity: 70%
Overall: they are technically both purple shades with a golden shift, yet Marquess is darker with a more opaque base and Hello Waffle is lighter with more shine. They fall in the same colour family, although HCB is technically an eyeshadow and Marquess a highlighter, But in my book, they are both a highlighter. Hehe.

Go with: Hot Cross Bunnies.
Why: both are discontinued, but HCB tends to stick its head up occassionally! Especially around Easter. If I'm 100% honest, I prefer HCB as a facial highlighter as the base of Marquess can look weird on light skin such as mine.

Tl;dr: Hot Cross Bunnies is a better bet if you want a purple highlighter.

Hello Waffle 25 - Hello Waffle Awoke At Dawn highlighter swatch dupe

Hello Waffle 25 - Hello Waffle Awoke at Dawn

Similarity: 85%
Overall: AAD is my all-time favourite highlighter, so I was pleased to see something similar! I don't know why, as the Lord knows I don't need more highlighters that look alike... but I just was, okay! Leave me alone already. Geez.
Anyhow, these are really similar. The shimmer and finish is the same. Yet 25 is more copper, whereas Awoke at Dawn leans pink.

Go with: ugh, this is like Sophie's choice right here. But I say... ehm... er... well... I guess... 25. But only Awoke at Dawn is currently available.
Why: I just can't resist anything copper, man :( AAD was my baby and still is, but goddangit, 25 is really something. Unfortunately, it again was part of the Black Friday limited edition. So if you want to get your rose-gold highlighter fix, Awoke at Dawn still won't disappoint you. Waiting around until 25 pops up again is probably not worth the wait. But if you happen to run into it, get on it like Trump on a refugee.

Hello Waffle Up Close and Personal - The Body Shop Shimmer Waves Coral highlighter swatch dupe

Hello Waffle Up Close and Personal - The Body Shop Shimmer Waves in Coral

Similarity: 80%.
Overall: they are both orangy/coral shimmery cheek products, but not similar enough to call dupes. Up Close and Personal is a straight up orange highlighter with golden shimmer, whereas the Shimmer Waves are a coral blush with some coral/golden shimmer. They are close, but no dupes.

Go with: either hunt down Up Close and Personal (again, discontinued) or don't buy any at all.
Why: holy Sahara, Batman! Those Shimmer Waves are stiff. Really dry and the pigmentation is not good enough to justify the dryness (but does it ever?). They even make that sound that only really dry products do when you swipe your finger on it (you know the one!). I bought it with a gift card, but they are not worth the €22 they cost.* It gets me worked up just thinking about it. Up your game, The Body Shop!

*= update: apparently they cost €23 now!!! *Implodes*

Tl;dr: Up Close and Personal is like the Shimmer Waves, except better. In everything. It's like your crush that's in a relationship vs. the asshole, less attractive yet available younger brother. Don't settle.

Makeup Geek Cherry Cola - Hello Waffle The Art of Witchcraft - Corvus Cosmetics Berenice swatch dupe

Makeup Geek Cherry Cola - Hello Waffle The Art of Witchcraft - Corvus Berenice

Similarity: I'm not going to bother you with numbers, but they ain't dupes.
Overall: I thought these would be closer, as I consider them all burgundy shades. Although MUG is close to HW in shade, it clearly lacks pigment (although a loose powder is easier to get opaque than pressed) and Berenice is more brown (but still leans pink when blended out, it's weird).

Go with: Either Hello Waffle if you want a true burgundy, or Berenice is you'd like a touch of brown.
Why: MUG formula just doesn't cut it for me anymore. HW's formula is the most superior of all (and personally I prefer the shade), though Berenice is far from bad and great quality too. Just go with your shade preference. Berenice and TAOW are both currently available, though Hello Waffle tends to change up their collections.

I realise I tend to give the mainstream products a hard time in these dupe posts and they tend to be the biggest losers of every post. I don't think it's because I'm biased, the indie products just often seem to rise above them in terms of quality. I certainly don't intend these post to shit on mainstream products or to make a point that "indie is better!!!!". I'm sorry if I came across that way, I promise I have no hidden agenda. To prove my point, I'm planning to review a ridicously oh-my-god-what-is-life-expensive mainstream product, so stay tuned!

Let's catch up! How do you feel about these dupes? How has January been treating you? What did you have for dinner yesterday? I'd love to know!

My 2016 New Year's resolutions - did I keep them?

Hi folks!

Sending you best wishes for 2017 and a new blogpost today. I made this post last year and I thought it would be fun to reflect back on that, seeing the fact that I'm absolutely awful at New Years resolution and pretty much everything else that involves long-term dedication - sticking to the topic, spoiler alert: my project pan is going bad, but oh well.

Ah, January 1st. If we only knew how shitty the year would turn out.

Ready? Here we go.

1. Learn a new English word everyday!

Did I succeedNah.

It sounded great in theory. I would subscribe to Word of the Day and get a new English word in my inbox every day. The first couple of days I was hardcore about remembering them, but after a couple of months I would look at the word, thought "uh-uh", and deleted the email. Some months ago I unsubscribed because I couldn't be bothered anymore.

2. Start a Youtube channel.

Did I succeed? Nope.

I really wanted to do this during the summer. In fact, I even sat down in front of the camera and talked without recording, but never pressed the button. After a while I lost interest and now I'm not even sure if I want to do it anymore. It seems fun at times, but I think I'm just not going to keep up. I haven't wrote a blogpost in months, why would I think keeping a video schedule would work? Sure, all it takes it dedication and motivation, but I just don't really see the point anymore.

2.5 Less anxious in general

Did I succeed? I guess so!

I still chickened out of a Youtube channel, but overall I think I'm less anxious. Don't get me wrong, I'm still an anxious mess, but I did reach certain milestones. For example, I joined a theatre club despite my sometimes crippling anxiety about social events and meeting new people. I'm less hesitant to go to the bathroom at public places. I'm still not where I want to be, but I'm planning to keep steady as I go.

3. Learn something new every month

Did I succeed? Hahahaha. No.

I'm pretty sure I completely forgot this resolution on January 2nd.

4. Not to live in the past

Did I succeed? Yes!

Now I'm not sure if this is because I didn't have all that many incredibly exciting things happen to me this year, but I don't reminisce all the time, I'm much more living in the now.

5. Kill 'em with kindness!

Did I succeed? Yes?

I'm not sure about this one. I definitely did become more apathetic towards people that I consider rude. When I see a person get racist and sexist (not talking about the US president here) instead of getting all worked up, I just let it slide. I don't mean I don't speak up when I have to - absolutely! But when something doesn't concern me - like, let's say, a dumb, passing-by comment on reddit - I don't see the point in making myself angry.

6. Try to step up my makeup-game

Did I succeed? I guess?

The changes I made with makeup weren't big, but I'm slightly better at eyeshadow now!

7. At least try to work out now and then

Did I succeed? Yep.

I'm still not working out on the daily, but I have worked out quite a bit this year! Whoo, go me, I guess.

What were your New Year's Resolutions? Did you keep them? Did you forget about them? Let me know!

Happy New Year's everyone, make sure to eat a ton and don't drink and drive!

Bite Beauty lipstick in 'Squid Ink' - Yep, it's blue

Hi friends!

Having experienced the horror of yesterday (writing this on Thursday), I felt like it was time for some Distraction Action and write a blog post. And what better subject to pick than a blue lipstick, y'all! The colour of the Democrats. Hillary's battle will be mourned.

Also, I bought this lipstick in the ever so holy place that is Sephora, in New York City earlier this year. If you've never been in an American Sephora, oh boy, are you missing out! And American readers of my blog: you don't know how lucky you are.

This particular lipstick is by Bite Beauty in the shade Squid Ink. Me, being unsuspectingly, tried this seemingly black lipstick on my face, and in the mirror the perfect navy lipstick - that I've been looking for for years - stared back at me. It was love at first sight.

I also bought this blue handmade(!) glass in a shop in NYC. HOW PRETTY?!

This was my first time encountering a Bite Beauty product. I've heard many people rave about their products on Youtube for quite some time now, so I'm thrilled to have tried the brand out myself. The brand is know for their foodgrade ingredients (hence 'Bite'), but it does mean that the shelf life is shorter. But hey, if you're in for a snack and can't find any chocolate, this might me the perfect (and most expensive) munchie.

The packaging is gorgeous and classy. A black matte bullet with an odd part missing from the tip - a bite?! Anyhow, gorgeous.

On application, a pleasant citrus-type of scent flatters your nostrils. I'm not the biggest citrus person, but it's not at all sharp and sweet enough for me to like it. Oh, and it also tastes delicious too. Making the biting-part extra hard to resist.

Sigh. Look at it, friends. It's perfect. It's the most fantastic dark navy blue with the tiniest bit of a teal undertone. It's pretty dark, and may seem black in some lighting. It's surprising how flattering blue lipstick can be. If you haven't tried it, I highly suggest you do!

Equally as great as the colour is the formula. You guys. I've sworn I'd only ever wear matte finishes but this satin finish lipstick has stolen my heart. Dare I say, this is the most comfortable lipstick I've ever worn. I remember the first time I applied it - my lips were dry and chapped, but after I put this on, my lips were so soft and so moisturized. Yet, it's not shiny at all and still can be blotted down easily.

It's not transfer-proof, but it lasts a really long time. I even survived some tacos. But in case reapplication is needed, it is a pleasant experience. It doesn't cake up like matte lipsticks can do, but it just adds more moisture (I do personally use a lip liner with it - just a blue eyepencil).

Can you hear angels sing? Because I sure as hell can.

Face swatch

Full face (all nice and dark hehe, but the colour is true to nature)

In case you can't tell, I'm completely head over heels with this lipstick. Bite Beauty has blown me away with their quality. The colour is gorgeous, the formula is out of this world, it's incredibly comfortable... The only downside is the fact that its shelf life isn't as long as regular lipsticks, which can be a problem, especially with 'out there' lipsticks. But to me, it's only a bigger motivation to use it more.

I can highly recommend Bite's lipsticks. It ain't cheap ($26) but I definitely think they are worth it, especially if you want to invest in a staple piece.

Available at an American Sephora store or

Sashay away - My first empties post!

My first empties post is a go! I've never done one of these. Mostly because I don't ever use products up for the life of me - a travel size shower gel literally took me 6 months to use up. How other people use 2 in a month? I have no sensibleanswer.

Also, I left out products like lotions, makeup removers, toothpaste, cotton pads and jazz like that. Why? Well, my blatant opinion is that personally I find them quite boring to read, especially when it's about products there's not much to say about (like toothpaste and cotton pads). I also leave out mascara because my lashes suck so every mascara kind of looks the same on them, which makes reviewing them pointless.
Other than that, I just don't use any products aside from bar soap, facial cleanser and absolute necessities like that (which again, take me several decades to use up). I dunno man, I just don't have the time and mostly dediction to use lotion every day. People who do: I salute you.

So I wanted to narrow it down to stuff I actually was able to use up and... makeup! Finishing a makeup product is a milestone in life that should be shared. Also, it shows what products are the bees knees, as it takes so long to use up and thus must be good.

Here are my picks.

Lipsync For Your Life - Product I want to use up: an Introduction #1

Can you tell I've been watching RuPaul's Drag Race? Because I have been. A lot. So I decided I wanted to name a new series on my blog after the show. If you've seen my latest post, you probably know that I want to buy less products and use my stash (I suggest you give it a read as it shows the direction my blog is going). There are 1) things that I want to keep no matter what ("Shante you stay"), 2) things that I will destash because I can not see myself using them ("Sashay away") and 3) products that are not my favourite but have so little product left that I will just use them up, after which I decide if I will repurchase them or not ("Lipsync for your life").

I wanted to name this series something else than "project pan" because real talk, these jars don't have a pan, haha! They have either stuff inside of them or not, no way around it, so I came up with different names! I hope it's not too confusing. I found it appropriate since drag queens go through makeup like water.

If you have no idea what the names of the categories mean, I highly suggest you watch RuPaul's Drag Race - also amongst other reasons because it's amazing.

This category is about the third group. They are pretty so I won't have issues using them up, so I won't destash them (hence the "you stay"). After I've used them up I will decide if I will repurchase them or not, hence the "lipsync for your life": this is their last chance to impress me.

"So good luck, and don't fuck it up."

And now for something completely different. (Longwinded rambling incoming)

Hi folks!

This is a complete, random blogpost that I didn't even plan to write. It just bubbled up inside me 1 minute ago, but it's about a topic that I've been thinking about for weeks now. It's something that directly effects my blog so it would be better to discuss it here and maybe spread the word.

No no, don't worry, I'm not quitting blogging, far from it. Blogging is one of the only places I can be endlessly creative and I wouldn't want to miss it. However, the topics I write about might change a bit in the near future. Let's just say, Kylie was right when she said 2016 is the year of realising things. I did some realising of my own.
